How your eyes work

Macula

The macula is a small and highly specialized area in the retina that provides us with our most detailed color perception of the outside world. If the macula is unhealthy, our resulting vision is a black and white blur.

Macula

What can go wrong?

The macula is a small and very specialized area of the retina that provides us with our primary color vision and our most acute central vision. If we lose this small region which compromises only the central few degrees of our overall visual field, the vision can drop dramatically from the normal 20/20 to 20/100 or worse very quickly. While there is no proven way to prevent macular degeneration, several studies have shown that certain vitamin supplements containing leutein, Vitamins C,A, E, and zinc can lessen your chances of having severe vision loss. If you smoke, stop. Exposures to cigarette smoke can double your risk of macular degeneration.
